Let's Save The Animals and Mother Nature

BAT

Bats are small furry mamals with leathery wings. They are the only mammals that can fly. Most bats only fly at night. They rest during the day, hanging upside down in caves, attics, barns, or trees. There are more than 900 kinds of bats, living all over the world, except in evry cold places. Some, such as horseshoe bats, are endangered.

Most bats have one baby a year. There is no nest for the young bat to sit in, so it clings to it's mother's fur or hangs from a rock. Baby bats feeds on their mother's milk for about six weeks.

Group Life

Bats rest by clinging to rocks or twigs with their curved claws. Most bats live in groups called colonies. In cool climates, where there are no insects in winter, bats either migrate to a warmer area, or they hibernate. Hibernation is a deep sleep in which the body does not need much energy, and therefor little food.

>Fruit bats feed on fruit and nectar from flowers. They can have a wingspan of nearly 5 feet.

Seeing in the dark

As it flies, a bat makes noises that are too high-pitched for people to hear. Tese sounds bounce off objects and back to the bat's ears. The echoes they make help they make help the bat to find its way in the dark and tell it where to catch its next insect meal.

The Vampire

Vampire bats feed on blood. At night they creep on the backs of cattle, bite through the skin and suck out blood. Their teeth are so sharp that they can bite without even waking their victims.
